PERFORMANCE AT NEW DEAL PACKS HOUSE
By Dorothy Sucher
Three Moon Union entertained
patrons of The New Deal Café with three fine voices on Saturday night,
March 31. The house was packed as the Takoma Park group, which bills itself
as " A Collective of Women in Song", swung into action with Rachel
Cross leading the way. A high-energy performer with a magnetic, authoritative
presence, Rachel sang her own compositions with feeling and, on occasion humor.
When she sings, the audience knows it is in good hands.
Her two companions onstage
were also outstanding, and their individual styles made for an evening of vocal
variety and mellow harmony. Mary Sue Twohy has a warmly lyrical quality, weaving
a gentler spell, and Michelle Swan's approach is vigorous yet deeply personal.
All three singers are also composers, and play guitar and rhythm instruments.
All have garnered awards and nominations to honor their musicianship.
New Deal Patrons will be able to hear Rachel Cross again on Friday, April 13, when she returns in the duo Rachel and Jaqui for a benefit performance.
